Create websites, web applications and desktop applications that run in Adobe Flash Player or the Adobe Integrated Runtime on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. That is, in a nutshell, the functionality you can expect to get from FlashDevelop, a code editor written in C# and presented as an open source project.

The ones to initiate the FlashDevelop project are Mika Palmu and Philippe Elsass. They developed the code editor way back in 2005 and meant for it to be a lightweight alternative to the commercial Adobe Flash Professional and Adobe Flash Builder editors.

The steps you must go through to install FlashDevelop on a Windows PC are presented in the Quick Look video that accompanies this article. I would like to mention that the FlashDevelop setup wizard will ask you to choose one of three installation options: Default, Standalone/Portable, and Custom. I would also like to mention that once the installation process completes, you will be invited to check out an online Getting Started guide.

FlashDevelop has lots of features to offer: support for multiple programming languages; code generation; code completion; snippets; file templates; syntax coloring; configurable hotkeys; plugins; bookmarks; macros; multiple publish options; lots of settings to play with. Since FlashDevelop is free and open source, you have all the time in the world to uncover all the features it has to offer.

This open source project is funded by donations – so if you find this code editor useful, make a donation to support its development.

Even though it is a free code editor for the Adobe Flash Platform, FlashDevelop has lots to offer. It is a properly good integrated development environment (IDE) for creating Flash websites and applications.

Pros

Choose one of three installation options: Default, Standalone/Portable, and Custom. Once the installation process completes, you will be invited to check out an online Getting Started guide. FlashDevelop has an easy to navigate interface; you can select what elements are displayed on the interface. There are lots of settings to play with. FlashDevelop has lots of features to offer; features that will help you come up with Flash websites, web applications, and desktop applications. FlashDevelop is a free and open source code editor (consider making a donation).

Cons

None that I could think of.
